- Appraise and demonstrate a breadth of knowledge relating to contemporary drawing practice.
For this assignment we were too redesign the 60s superhero OMAC, too a more modern looking design to be used in a current day film. First I identified the most important aspects of the original design, the eye and the mohawk. The mohawk was something I also identified as the biggest problem area, and starting out on this image I spent alot of time trying to figure out a way were I could normalize the mohawk, and struggled alot trying to find a way to keep it as an iconic part of the design, while making it more modern. I did eventually end up doing the opposite - keep the mohawk as it was, and redesign the character in a way that would make it normal and acceptable for him to have such a hairstyle. Trying out few different ideas, I ended with the idea of making him more of a traditional maori warrior type, and resulted in this initial sketch. Taking that back in for feedback, I changed the pose and used more reference on the anatomy to get that correct. I also did a background to try and portrait a bit of a story, however I should have tied the character a bit more in to the background, and possibly raised his head slightly to make my idea that he was getting ready to go out and face whatever was happening more obvious than that he is just hiding in a shed. The colors are also a bit oversaturated, and taking the image further I would change the pose of the head, make some of the colours, particularly the grass a bit more desaturated, and change the shape of the doorway so its a bit more uneven, and avoid having several large rectangles in the image. Omac - Identify resources and demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of techniques required for a range of drawing tasks.Resources that are important would be references, various brushes and tools and textures applied to enhance and improve the drawing. Another important resource that, while it is not something that technically improves the drawing straight out, is peer feedback and simply talking to other artists and using them as a resource, as I believe it is one of the best ways to improve your drawing.
- Evaluate historical and contemporary practice in drawing.In this I will compare a very famous image from Norwegian national romanticism, Bridal Procession in Hardanger by Tideman & Gude, with a modern Fantasy Landscape concept drawn by Feng Zhu.There are many similarities in the images and the composition, both being of similar motives, and a lot of issues have been solved in the same manner. The river in both images is curved and snakes itself into the image, albeit at different angles to lead the eye further in. Depth is also displayed by the use of overlapping mountains and rocky outcrops from foreground to back, and the general feel of the same images are the same. The technique applied, while similar in some areas, particularly the mountains in the background is very different, but you can still spot similarities in areas, such as the water and the textures of the rocks.
- Synthesise observation, existing and acquired knowledge in the production of original imagery.This image was created using knowledge about anatomy, reference images aswell as research into different maori tattoos and tools, aswell as into the iconography behind the omac character.
- Analyse and interpret visual situations in order to represent them effectively.This is something that has been done throughout all of the year in this module during life drawing, and can is demonstrated in the lifedrawing images.
- Demonstrate use of appropriate tools and techniques to achieve a professional result.This is something that has been on all images produced in this module this year.
- Apply practice-based research to the development of original ideas.Life drawing practice helped me develop understanding of anatomy and the human form, that was then applied to create the OMAC picture.
- Apply professional techniques to a range of commercial problemsThroughout this entire module, on all the various assignments we have had for this I have proven my ability to do this with all the images produced.
